Real Women Sports Fans!
A dialogue I had with a female acquaintance from a few weeks ago:
Me: I gotta get home. The Steelers play at 8:20.
Her: Oh I LOVE football! I like the Patriots!
Me: *skeptical* Really? Who did they play this week I forget? (Really I knew but this was just a test.)
Her: Girl, I forget too! But I watch them every week!
Me: Really who are your favorite players on the team?
Her: I really like Tom Brady and Randy Moss!
Me: *laughing* You do know that Randy Moss hasn’t played for the Patriots in like a month right?
Her: What?!
Conversation finished!
I love sports. My heart lies with NFL but all in all I enjoy sports as a whole. Not only do I watch them I also watch and listen to sports commentary every day of the week. I truly enjoy athletic competition and the politics of what goes on behind the scenes in the sports world. It is a shame because I may not know what is going on in current world events when it comes to politics, natural disasters, etc. but ask me who is on the waivers and I can have a full out conversation with all the details. I think many men are surprised at the fact that when I do participate in a conversation with them about sports that I know just as much if not more than them. Now I will admit I don’t follow all sports equally. I think I am most knowledgeable about:
1. NFL
2. NBA
3. NCAA Men’s Basketball (only because my fanatical best friend and father keep me in the loop)
Everything aside from these I know the dynamics of the game and the current news of what’s going on but I do not follow and know it as well as I know the above 3. I have noticed that there are more and more women who are the same way. However, I can count on ONE hand the women who I will seriously talk sports with. A lot of women claim they are sports fans but don’t know some of the basics things about the sports they claim to love. Why are more women into sports these days? I think some of the reasons may be the difference in modern father daughter relationships and also marketing i.e. the huge Breast Cancer Awareness campaign that the NFL does each season. Personally, I love sports so much because for as long as I can remember that’s what me and my father did. We watched sports and he would explain all the details and history behind the sports we watched. This developed into Hall of Fame visits and attending games. When I was really young I didn’t really care but as I got into my teenage years I began to understand and appreciate it more.
I will say this, one of my biggest pet peeves is hearing a woman who is not knowledgeable about sports try to talk about it! I mean it is painful. It’s cool if you are a casual sports watcher and you are not really that into it. That’s fine! BUT don’t front like you are. It is annoying and unnecessary and you are giving the women who DO know what they are talking about a bad wrap! I will give a relatively SIMPLE quiz to test your sports cred ladies. If you are really into sports you should be able to answer these questions without pause:
1: How many games must you win to win the World Series? (I don’t even like baseball but can answer this question!)
2. What is a triple double?
3. What is a bogey? I will even give a break… In what sport can you get a bogey?
4. What’s your favorite NFL team? Okay now who else is in the division with your favorite NFL team?
5. Name 8 NFL quarterbacks? (That’s only 1/4 of the leagues quarterbacks shouldn’t be hard.)
6. What 2 NBA teams have won the most titles? (EASY!)
So after this self evaluation ladies how would you categorize yourselves?
I’ve noticed that a lot more women are interested in sports too…but they don’t know the game pass the starting whistle or a coin toss! They like the teams colors, or the star players last Jordan commercial…and don’t let a team have ONE good looking player on their team…their female fanship increases threefold! All of this grinds my gears b/c I have been a sports girl all my life and can run down just about any sport inside out complete with historical stats etc. But because of this new breed of bandwagon bunnies most of my sports knowledge is discounted…hmph!

1. I dunno

3. Golf Term – 1 over the par
4. It depends, i usually make a decision in this order
A. black coach
B. black quarterback
C. Then where the state falls in terms of the mason dixon line
5. umm Mike Vick, Donovan McNabb,…
6. Umm Chicago and LA??
I prefer soccer. lol I enjoyed the worldcup Brazil 2013 here i come
McNabb! That’s who I was trying to think of…
Great quiz! I tore through it, rather unexpectedly (then again…I have 4 brothers).
Oh, but one thing: The World Cup is coming to Brazil in 2014.
I passed your quiz except for #5. 8 is A LOT! I didn’t even try cause I knew I’d fail. lol Uh, Cassel, Favre, Jamarcus Russell (he still play?), Brady, *I’m really thinking hard here! lol* um…*a good 70 seconds pass as I continue to think* Vick! He just made a comeback, Cam Newton (Just kidding, I know he’s Auburn/college ball), errr, why can’t I think of his name, older, black QB, got sat out last week and pissed everyone off…well there you go, I was right, I couldn’t get 8
Wait! Eli Manning. That’s 6 right? (assuming Jawalrus is still in the game)
I’m very team specific on my fandom…even then, I can’t tell you all their names, just the big names mostly. I watch, I enjoy, I make no apologies for not living and breathing sports, that doesn’t make me less of a fan and I don’t front like I am a super fan. But sometimes people assume that you are if you rattle of any one lil fact. Just cause I know every detail of the last game I watched doesn’t mean I know stats from the ’93 Bulls game 3.
To be real honest my love for sports is much more about my relationship with my father and subsequent relationships with men than with the actual game. I never played football. I don’t understand it as well as say, basketball, volleyball, or softball. And soccer bores me to tears. But if I was invited on a soccer date, I’d go, it’s fun, they can teach me (I’ve gone with my girl friends too). It’s about the us vs. them anf being together. *shrug* Unless it’s championship time or my team.
Cutler! D@mn…I remembered one more…
yeah i’ll be printing this out and giving it out to a couple of women.
This is a great post….I did well with this post, I wasn’t sure abt the last question tho (My first intuition was correct, I surprised myself). I don’t consider myself a huge sports fan overall, but football season is my fave time of year. I grew up in a football house tho, so that’s probably why.
I’m not EVEN gonna attempt to answer those.
I’m no sports chick, but I cheer for the home team. I don’t trash talk, b/c idk what I’m looking at on the TV screen. LOL
From another diehard (female) sports fan, THANK YOU!
And then there are seasonal watchers like me who tune in for the playoffs and the superbowl (commercials).
