SLAME THEATRE 1.0 TO PREMIERE AT INTERSECTIONS
New Galaxy Theatre Group will present the world premiere of Slam Theatre 1.0 on February 25 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC as part of Intersections: A New America Arts Festival. Slam Theatre 1.0 is an exciting fusion of sketch comedy, spoken word poetry and live DJ music. It hilarious show highlights the human need to love and be loved; and explores sex, dating, and romance in the City. It is written by playwright Malcolm Pelles, showcases DJ RBI on the turntables; and features spoken word artists Bomani Armah (Read A Book), Goldie Deane, and Chantal Ellen. It is directed by DC theatre veteran KenYatta Rogers; and stars Felipe Cabezas, Rafael Cuesta, Leigh Anna Fry, and Soneyet Muhammd. The show runs through March 5.
With Slam Theatre 1.0 New Galaxy Theatre Group continues to address the void that it sees in the Washington, DC theatre scene. According to New Galaxy Theatre Group producer Conroy Harding there are few, if any outlets, in DC that offer sophisticated, accessible theatrical experiences for young, upwardly-mobile professionals. This is especially true, he believes, when it comes to white-collar workers of color.
“There are usually only two options for young professionals for live theatre in DC,” says Harding. “The established theater companies that perform either classics or new work that tends to be sophisticated, but esoteric and abstract. Or there are touring shows like Tyler Perry’s plays that are more accessible, but have no complexity.”
According to Harding, who is also a lawyer, one of New Galaxy Theatre Group’s goals is to create plays that balance sophistication and accessibility. New Galaxy plays also often reflect the lives of young upwardly mobile people. “I was a corporate lawyer. I have friends that are doctors, engineers, and consultants,” he states. “I know what it’s like to be a young professional, searching for live entertainment for college-educated people that are into culture, but wouldn’t consider themselves artsy. Also I know what professionals can relate to.”
This search for an equilibrium and relatable material doesn’t mean that New Galaxy Theatre Group neglects artistry. Malcolm Pelles co-founded New Galaxy with Harding, and has a Master’s degree in dramatic writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. “Although we’re concerned about audience, all of our shows start from artistic places,” Pelles says. “Slam Theatre 1.0 for example is influenced by a lot of artistic traditions, and references everything from Woody Allen to Blaxploitation movies to Takashi Murakami to David Ives.”
Tickets for Slam Theatre 1.0 are $20, and can be purchased in advance at www.intersectionsdc.com, www.newgalaxytheatre.com, or by calling 202-399-7993.
